Welcome to the old news archive.
September 29, 2007.
Scorpions downed Beer Garden 3-1 rounding out the group stage, and edged out Best Club to reach the finals on goal difference. Beer Garden had also done enough to escape the group and so the two teams would meet again to decide the winner. The final match was a high intensity affair from start to finish. Scorpions finally played some decent football and finished off the Beer Garden boys 2-0 to take the Sunshine Cup trophy. Best Club and Miners finished third and fourth respectively.
September 24, 2007.
Yesterday was the first day of the Sunshine Cup 7aside tournament at BLCU, and it was the newly formed Beer Garden FC getting off to a terrific start winning both of their matches convincingly. Scorpions got off to a good start winning their first match against Miners, before turning in a shaky performance against Best Club, eventually losing their second match one-nil. Scorpions have put themselves in a must win situation next weekend when they'll face their new foreign rivals Beer Garden. Matches kick off at 4pm, BLCU.
September 9, 2007.
The Sunshine Cup is going ahead as a 7aside mini league at BLCU. We managed to find two local Chinese teams interested in participating, and with all the new students we've met at BLCU, have organized a second international team called Beer Garden FC, in honour of the local drink spot. Look for some good 7aside action to kick off at BLCU 4pm on September 16th and 23rd!
August 1, 2007.
We have finished the tenth match of our 11aside season in the Wu Dao Kou friendlies circuit. After losing our first match we made some changes and won nine games in a row against some tough teams. Our club is organizing the Sunshine Cup 2007, which was originally scheduled to be an 11aside league kicking off in July. After three local teams quit the tournament at the last minute for different reasons, the tournament was put on hold. I'm now in the process of reorganizing it as a 7aside mini league at BLCU. Our long term goal is to grow organized amateur football in the Wu area but so far the teams aren't interested in anything more than friendly matches.
June 9, 2007.
Heading into our sixth match tomorrow we're looking for a good result against
the Beijing Forestry Association, following four straight wins. The Sunshine Cup
tournament is picking up momentum and we're hoping to carry our good form into organized competition beginning
July 21st.
April 30, 2007.
The newly reformed Scorpions FC are preparing for our first friendly match versus a local team on May 6. 2pm Kickoff at BLCU.
April 8, 2007.
We're back! The Scorpions are training outdoors after many months, and we're starting to put together a new team.
Brief history for new players.New players browse around the site for more information. Our Reports section is outdated, I'll be adding new reports to it this week. Most of our pictures are up, 2006 pics will be up hopefully this weekend. I'm also working on a timeline to bring new players up to date on what we've done. Here's a brief summary. April 2005, James O. and PPY decide to form an international team.
Scorpions played friendly matches each weekend against local Beijing teams in the Northern Beijing "league", Haidian district. We also trained Fridays at KE JI DA XUE (Science and Tech Uni).
In April 2006 James organised the LAI FU CUP at Beijing Medical University, where we met and recruited Abbas and Abdi to join the squad. Abdi competed in the tournament and helped the team on to winning our first trophy with an impressive unbeaten peformance in which Steve took the golden boot. With the World Cup down the road, the team took some time off, playing only a couple of disappointing friendlies before Italy stole the trophy.
In July/August of 2006 we participated in a 10 team 7aside tournament with some of the top foreign teams in Beijing. We ended up finishing second in the tournament on goal difference. Soon after we played our last match of 2006 against Vikings and the team folded.
September, 2006.
Our last game against Vikings was a disaster. None of our three goal keepers showed up so we had to use a random kid from the park, who let every single shot on goal in. We also had a shortage of outfield players and wound up having to use a few strangers. I'm very disappointed in the lack of loyalty from a lot of our players, this was our last match together.
July-August, 2006.
We put in a good showing in the Sevens tournament, definetly our best football. Took a few teams by surprise and finished second by goal difference in the ten team round robin. I'm proud of our performance but at the same time head butting the wall over how close we came to winning. If only a couple more of you had showed up for the last match. It's been a good run, time to fold the team and move on.
June-July, 2006.
World Cup...drunken haze. Madness. We played some friendlies in here and didn't do very well. Scraped together a few draws, a few memorable goals, a win or two, and some terrible losses. Gotta get back in shape for the Sevens tournament!
April 23, 2006.
We kicked off our Spring 2006 outdoor friendly season with a 15-0 win over a
KE JI DA XUE (Science and Technology University) student amateur team. Although
our opponents lack of organization or any sort of tactics saw all of them run
hell for leather around in circles and never really threaten goal (aside from a
missed penalty kick), they displayed good sportsmanship and played hard
throughout. Kevin (CHN) and Luo (CHN) made their 11 aside debuts in this match.
April 22, 2006.
Our IFFC sister team the Redberries held the Beijing Celtics to a 3-3 draw after
leading 90 minutes by a goal a penalty box scramble following a free kick saw
Celtic pull back the equalizer. A hard fought match, this sees the Berries
continue a long running unbeaten streak through the second half of the season.
April 17, 2006.
The Beijing Scorpions are now one year old! Our first friendly match was
played on this day one year ago at Ya Yun Cun Olympic park.
April 10, 2006.
We finished first in the LAI FU ZU QIU LIAN SAI (Year of
the Dog Tournament) after winning five matches in two days to
top the group of six teams. Fore more info and photos checkout www.getthai.com/football
"It's been a hectic last couple of months getting everything together for the
tournament but in the end with everyone's cooperation we pulled it off. Thanks
again to all of you who helped me bring this together and look out for LAI FU
CUP 2 coming this Summer!" - James
In other news, our IFFC sister team the Red Berries (DIV 3A) have turned around
and are undefeated in the second half of their season with a little help on the
weekends from our Chris, Brian, Rob, Pong and James. The goal now is to get them
out of the Division 3 cellar which looks hopeful after a 3-0 win last weekend
over Neverstop. Next match is Saturday vs. Celtics.
April 2, 2006.
The tournament kicks off this weekend and with the absence of several of our
Chinese players due to exams we have recruited two new midfielders Abdi (KEN)
and Pong (THA). Let's hope we have enough manpower to finish the job as we're
expecting some tough competition, especially from the Renmin University team who
are bringing along BTV cameras to document their victory. We'll see...
March 1, 2006.
We are having 5aside training matches indoors every weekend leading up to
the tourney kickoff in April. Welcome new players Kevin (CHN), Luo (CHN), and JJ
(KOR) to the squad. Also say goodbye to our target man Damien Calves aka Yoshi
(FRA) he's leaving us for Thailand. Good luck!
February 10, 2006.
Happy New Year to everyone! Welcome to our new home at getthai.com/scorpions
and a big thanks to www.getthai.com who
have now become our official web sponsors! The big hairy Scorpions are back in
training in preparation for the 2006 Year of the Dog Football Tournament. Check
it out on the web at www.getthai.com/football
December 6, 2005.
The Beijing Scorpions Fall season is over! The team is now on holiday during
the winter until our next event, the Scorpions Indoor Derby, probably scheduled
for January 15th, 2006. This will be a fun indoor football event for the whole
team with hopeful players and friends of the club invited along to celebrate the
New Year somewhere warm and get some exercise while we're at it.
November 27, 2005.
Bai di lao huo ji club 10 Scorpions 4
Scorpions crushed at Medical University! Injuries and lack of substitutes was
just what it took to end our 11 game unbeaten streak in a second
half collapse that conceded
seven goals...
November 20, 2005.
The first Scorpions Derby took place at Sports Center Ya Yun Cun, with our
European team (France, England, Ireland) taking on our World team (Argentina,
China, Canada, Mexico). After a close first half 8v8 scrimmage the European team
outplayed the World team in the second half to come away with a solid victory.
November 12, 2005.
Scorpions 4 Seven Wolves 4
Saturday morning hangovers almost brought our unbeaten streak to an end against
a skilled Seven Wolves side, but in the end we managed to salvage a
draw...
November 6, 2005.
Scorpions 1 Zhang Yong Team 0
This game was a throw away after ten minutes due to the fighting that broke out
on the pitch, it's going in as a win as anyone watching knew how this was going
to wind up. I think overall our players reacted very well to stay calm following
provocations by men armed with sticks and chairs. I'm starting to think violence
and racism in sport is more than just a trend here, it's a tradition. We will
continue to play for fun, not for "face", and there will be many more games to
come. On a positive note, we're now unbeaten in 10 games, and will look
elsewhere next week for some competition.
November 5, 2005.
Some big website updates today, every section now has content. Welcome new
members Steve from England and Romeo from France to the club. Also today our
IFFC sister team the Redberries dropped a 5-2 decision putting them between a
rock and a hard place in Divison 3A. Good luck guys!
October 30, 2005.
Scorpions 5 Crazy Weekend Club 5
The Crazy Weekend Club, comprised of several familiar faces from Zhang Yong's
team came out with a lineup stacked with players from IFFC's Afrika United, and
after going up by two at the end of
the first half...
Also on this day, our sister team the Red Berries lost their IFFC Division 3A
match with the Drifters 4-3. Mathew says the game resembled much of the previous
loss to the Mafia team, with a lot of good pressure and possession but not
enough finishing to seal the win.
October 23, 2005.
Scorpions 7 Zhang Yong Team 6
After steam rolling the Zhang team throughout the first half, the Scorpions fell
victim to injury and lack of manpower to barely hold on
to the win...
October 22, 2005.
Our sister team the Red Berries lost their IFFC Division 3A match 3-2 to
Mafia FC. A disappointing first half saw the Berries fall behind by two before
getting back in the game. The second half was all Berries pressure but after
countless failed scoring chances saw the team leave with a loss.
October 21, 2005.
We assembled the team for a formal training session at the Ya Yun Cun Olympic
Stadium where we snapped a new team photo. Of the original squad who
met here last April for our first friendly match we have six players still with
the club.
October 15, 2005.
Scorpions 2 Ke ji da xue Tech class 2
This Saturday morning game saw us playing once again at our original home
field, the Beijing Science and Technology University. We're still waiting on
Brian's match report for this one...
October 10, 2005.
Beijing Scorpions website is now officially back up in its
new and improved format. The site will be under construction for the next week
as we get all the old pics and match reports back up, along with some new
information and team policies. Don't forget to look for news here on upcoming
matches as we get ready for our Fall/Winter season. Special thanks to Chris
McKoy at Getthai.com for his support.
October 6, 2005.
We played a relaxed friendly 8v8 match against a class from the Beijing
Science and Technology University, which I've listed here as training. After dominating the first half we were
eventually outplayed but came away with a 4-2 win with a goal from James Oliver
and three from Pei ping yang. Man of the match was our goal keeper Liu xue bin
who was solid at stopping shots all game. October 1, 2005.
Welcome to the new site!
While much was made of our discussed merge with the Red Berries team, in the end
our players voted to keep our club the way it is. We will continue to support
the Berries as they try to overcome the pitfalls of organized amateur sports,
and stay alive in IFFC Division 3.
